Sling Angle Tension Multipliers & Capacity Retention Reference (ASME B30.9)

As the horizontal sling angle between the load and the sling leg decreases below 90 deg, tension inside each sling leg increases sharply. Multiply your load weight (or divide single-leg vertical capacity) by the ASME B30.9 angle factor below, and never rig below a 30 deg horizontal sling angle without engineering approval:

Horizontal Sling Angle Derating & Tension Multiplier Chart
Horizontal Sling Angle Included Angle (2 Legs) Tension Multiplier per Leg Effective Capacity Retained Rigging Recommendation
90 deg (Vertical) 0 deg 1.000 x Load 100% of Vertical WLL Full rated vertical capacity
60 deg Angle 60 deg 1.155 x Load 86.6% per Leg Preferred multi-leg bridle & basket angle
45 deg Angle 90 deg 1.414 x Load 70.7% per Leg Standard minimum working angle for general picks
30 deg Angle 120 deg 2.000 x Load 50.0% per Leg Caution: leg tension equals full load weight (50% reduction)
