Wire Rope Slings
Our Wire Rope Slings & Wire Rope Bridles are made in the USA. We use only EIPS (Extra Improved Plow Steel) and stronger wire rope. These lifting slings are made primarily with 6 X 26 class of wire rope. However, we use 6 X 36 class wire rope when building larger diameter slings.
The Slings Unlimited Wire Rope Sling Builder allows you to create the type of wire rope sling best suited for your application. Choose the diameter of wire rope, the number or legs (choker or bridle) and whether you need a hook or not. There is even an option to select the type of eye (thimble or standard).
Custom wire rope lifting slings are also available. If you need slings larger than 1″ in diameter or perhaps braided wire rope slings, visit our Contact Us page to get customized quote. You can also send an e-mail to info@slingsunlimited.com.
Be sure to check out our Learning Center. We have capacity charts for wire rope slings, nylon slings, chain slings and other rigging hardware.
EIPS IWRC Wire Rope Slings & Bridles — Engineering Reference & Buyer’s Guide
Slings Unlimited fabricates domestic Extra Improved Plow Steel (EIPS) Independent Wire Rope Core (IWRC) wire rope slings and multi-leg bridles in Augusta, Georgia. Every sling uses mechanical Flemish Eye splices pressed with carbon steel sleeves for a 5:1 ASME B30.9 / OSHA 1910.184 design factor.
3 Single-Leg Eye Configurations
Single-leg wire rope chokers are available in Standard Flemish Eye & Eye, Heavy-Duty Thimble Eye & Eye, and our Hybrid One Standard Eye & One Thimble Eye configuration—giving riggers a protected thimble on the hook end and a flexible soft eye for tight choking.
2-Leg, 3-Leg & 4-Leg Wire Rope Bridles
Multi-leg wire rope bridles are assembled on a Grade 80 alloy oblong master link with your choice of Standard Flemish Eyes, Heavy-Duty Thimble Eyes, or Thimble Eyes fitted with Grade 80 Alloy Eye Hoist Hooks and safety latches.
6×19 / 6×26 & 6×36 EIPS IWRC Rope
Smaller diameters use abrasion-resistant 6×19 / 6×26 Warrington Seale construction, while larger diameters transition to flexible, fatigue-resistant 6×36 IWRC wire rope rated up to 400°F.

Frequently Asked Questions
When should I choose a Standard & Thimble Eye single-leg wire rope sling?
A single-leg wire rope sling with one Standard Flemish Eye and one Heavy-Duty Thimble Eye gives you steel thimble reinforcement on the crane hook or shackle end while keeping a soft, flexible Flemish eye on the load end so the rope can pass through tight spaces and form a clean choker hitch.
Why are Flemish Eye mechanical splices preferred over turnback eyes?
A Flemish Eye divides the wire rope strands into two halves that are laid back into each other to form a natural loop before the carbon steel sleeve is swaged. Even if the sleeve experiences extreme surface abuse, the mechanical weave of the Flemish splice retains core holding strength.
How is Inside Eye Length measured on Standard and Thimble wire rope slings?
Inside Eye Length is measured from the inside throat crotch of the eye loop (or the inside point of the steel thimble) to the inside load-bearing curve at the top of the eye. Standard Flemish eyes follow the industry 1:2 width-to-length ratio (e.g., 4" wide × 8" long on 1/2" wire rope).
What is the maximum operating temperature for EIPS IWRC wire rope slings?
Because our wire rope slings are built with an Independent Wire Rope Core (IWRC) and carbon steel sleeves rather than a fiber core, they can operate in ambient temperatures from -40°F up to 400°F (204°C) without derating.
What broken-wire count requires removing a wire rope sling from service?
Per OSHA 1910.184 and ASME B30.9, remove a strand-laid wire rope sling from service if you find 10 randomly distributed broken wires in one rope lay, 5 broken wires in one strand in one rope lay, kinking, bird-caging, heat damage, or a missing capacity tag.
