Rigging Shackles (Crosby, CM Super Strong & Van Beest Green Pin) — Buyer’s Guide
Slings Unlimited stocks forged anchor shackles from the world’s premier rigging hardware manufacturers—Columbus McKinnon (CM) Made-in-USA Super Strong shackles, Crosby G-209 and G-2130 shackles, and Van Beest Green Pin® G-4161 and G-4163 shackles. Every shackle meets or exceeds ASME B30.26 and Federal Specification RR-C-271H.
Screw Pin Anchor (SPA) vs. Bolt-Type Anchor
Screw Pin Anchor shackles (Crosby G-209, Green Pin G-4161, CM SPA) allow fast pin installation for temporary rigging picks. Bolt-Type Safety Anchor shackles (Crosby G-2130, Green Pin G-4163, CM Bolt Type) add a threaded bolt, nut, and cotter pin for permanent, overhead, or rotational installations.
CM USA Super Strong (6:1 Design Factor)
Made in the USA by Columbus McKinnon, CM Super Strong forged carbon shackles deliver 17% to 50% higher Working Load Limits than conventional carbon shackles of the same bow diameter while maintaining a full 6:1 design factor.
Hot-Dip Galvanized & Orange Powder Finishes
Hot-dip galvanized bows and alloy pins provide long-term corrosion protection in marine, construction, and outdoor crane environments, with permanently forged WLL and size markings on every shackle body.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is shackle size measured—by the bow diameter or the pin diameter?
Shackles are always sized by the nominal diameter of the curved bow (body), not the pin diameter. On standard anchor shackles, the alloy pin is one nominal size larger than the bow—for example, a 3/4" shackle has a 3/4" bow diameter and a 7/8" diameter pin.
When is a Bolt-Type shackle required instead of a Screw Pin shackle?
Use a Bolt-Type shackle (with bolt, nut, and cotter pin) whenever a shackle remains in place for semi-permanent or permanent rigging, overhead suspension, or when a moving load or sling could twist the pin and unscrew a standard screw pin.
How does side-loading affect the Working Load Limit of an anchor shackle?
Per ASME B30.26 and manufacturer ratings, in-line (0°) loading carries 100% of rated WLL. Side-loading at 45° from in-line reduces the rated capacity by 30% (to 70% of WLL), and loading at 90° reduces the capacity by 50% (to 50% of WLL).
Should the sling eye go on the shackle pin or in the shackle bow?
When connecting two or more sling legs to a single shackle, always place the sling eyes in the rounded shackle bow (never on the pin) and ensure the included angle between legs does not exceed 120°. Place a single hook or padeye on the pin using spacers if needed to keep the load centered.
What is the difference between Crosby, CM Super Strong, and Van Beest Green Pin shackles?
All three meet ASME B30.26 with a 6:1 design factor. CM Super Strong shackles are forged in the USA with higher WLL ratings per size; Crosby is the global oilfield/construction specification standard; and Van Beest Green Pin shackles are forged in the Netherlands for top European quality at an economical price.
Lifting Shackles
Lifting Shackles are a critical component in every rigging tool box. There are numerous types available, from screw pin anchor to bolt type chain to wide body shackles. There are also just as many different manufacturers and countries of origin. Slings Unlimited chose only the best manufacturers and the most common types and sizes to feature on our website.
Just like with our slings, we have USA made shackles too! The domestic brand we choose to offer is Columbus McKinnon (CM). Their line of Super Strong carbon shackles cannot be matched for strength, safety and price. They offer an industry best 6:1 safety factor, while providing a greater working load limit (WLL) than others the same size.
As much as we like to promote American made products, we understand they won’t fit into everyone’s budget. The is why Slings Unlimited offers the Van Beest (aka; Green Pin) brand of imported shackles. These are European made and, while they are less expense than other brands, they meet all the same standards as outlined ASME B30.26.
We primarily stock galvanized finished shackles, although painted are available. If you don’t see the size or type you’re looking for, click on our Contact Us page or send us an e-mail and ask for a competitive quote.
